Cartecay Vineyards is located in Ellijay, GA, in the Cartecay region, just a short drive from the Ocoee River! The Southern Appalachians in North Georgia are ideal for growing wine grapes. The elevation, the soil and the climate combine to produce wine grapes of the highest quality and subsequently, fine wines.
Cartecay Vineyards has western facing slopes. Which allow for the vines to receive maximum sun exposure. This is an important factor which is conducive to growing the finest grapes. The Vineyard was planted in the spring of 2008 with two varieties, Vidal Blanc and Merlot. Since 2008 four more varieties have been planted; Traminette, Norton (Cynthiana), Catawba and Cabernet Sauvignon, with more planned.
CV was originally a working farm, dating back to 1890. The original farm grew corn and hay, grazed cattle, and raised hogs and mules. When Cartecay Vineyards acquired the farm in 2007, it had been inactive for quite some time and had been taken back by Mother Nature. The farm that now exists as a vineyard was created by combining the original farm layout with the specific needs of a vineyard.
Incidentally, Cartecay is a Cherokee word, which means “Bread Valley”.
