The Upper Ocoee: America’s Olympic River

Raft on the same course as the Olympic Whitewater contenders!

The Ocoee Whitewater Center on the Upper Ocoee River was purpose built for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. This the only in-river course to be used for Olympic slalom competition.

The 500 meter section of the river used for the 1996 Olympic whitewater slalom events was engineered by TVA. The river section was channelized and reduced in width by two thirds. The river with was reduced from 200 feet to just 70 increasing the big water feel and push. Additional features were added and enhanced creating powerful rapids. The ledges and eddy lines were designed to challenge Olympic caliber competitors. Aesthetic efforts were made to use natural rock during construction to help blend the center with Ocoee’s rugged beauty.

Your trip will begin well upstream of the Ocoee Whitewater Center. Traveling through a remote canyon will wrap you in the natural beauty of the blue ridge mountains. Your trip will last five miles featuring some of the most powerful rapids of the Ocoee River.

The first mile is easy and lazy. But soon the river play and rapids begin increasing in gradient. The rapids begin to build larger and larger until you reach the Olympic course. Mikey’s Ledge, Humongous, and Godzilla rapids are all rated Class IV. The whitewater action won’t disappoint as you conquer the famous rapids and features of the Upper Ocoee River.

Book your trip early! Because Upper Ocoee trips are only available on weekends from mid-May until mid-September. With only 34 days to choose from the trips often sell out.
