The Chilhowee Campground and Recreation Area are in the Cherokee National Forest. This is a great campground. With more than 70 campsites, electric hookups, RV sites, tent-only sites, bathhouses, and a 7-acre lake, Chilhowee Campground is a great destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Maximum of 5 people and 2 vehicles are allowed at each site. Thus, this is a great place to base your whitewater activities on the Ocoee River.
The campground is open from early April to late October. But the overflow area and day use area are available year-round. Additionally, there is a lake offers a swim area with a sandy beach. Bank fishing is also possible. You may bring small boats to paddle on the lake. No worries for mom or swimmers, as gasoline motors are not allowed on the boats. For those who prefer to hike or bike, there are approximately 25 miles of hiking and biking trails, and a scenic waterfall.
On the drive up to the campground, stop at one of the many observation overlooks to see beautiful mountain settings. Wildlife is abundant in this area! So take photos and tread lightly. Food storage restrictions apply in all areas of the Cherokee National Forest. Store all food and beverages approved bear-proof containers, your locked vehicle, or hard-sided camper at all times.
