After whitewater rafting through Grumpy’s Ledge and North Shore the river relaxes just before encountering two ledges. The first smaller ledge is known as Power Flow and provides a great surf spot for hard-boats. Kayakers are often seen practicing jet ferries. The second larger ledge is Staging Eddy. Rafts make a big splash in the hole towards river right. Meanwhile kayaks queue up to surf a smaller hole to the left. However there is another hole about fifty feet downstream both rafts and kayaks can surf. Watch this short video to see Staging Eddy’s highlights:
As you enter the eddy to wait you may notice a stick gauge TVA has installed. Raft guides have various stories about rock formation nearby and in Staging Eddy to tell while waiting to surf. One Rock resembles a turtle or dinosaur depending upon the viewers perspective. The guide and crew practice teamwork to surf at Staging Eddy; the practice will pay off downstream at Double Suck and other popular surf spots. There are still many rapids to experience on the Middle Ocoee as you depart from Staging Eddy for Gonzo Shoals.
